Ambassadors of EU countries lay flowers to memorial in Kurapaty

2 November, on the day when many Europeans commemorate the dead, the heads of missions of the European Union in Minsk, their families and other members of the diplomatic corps will lay flowers and lighten candles in Kurapaty – one of the mass grave sites of repression victims in former USSR. It is said in the statement of Slovak Republic in Belarus, which represents the EU here.

“By this quiet remembrance the diplomats commemorate the 70-th anniversary of the climax of repressions against innocent Belarusians, Poles, Russians, Jews and other nationalities in Belarus, who lost their lives or were persecuted in the anxious XX century, and pay the tribute to the memory of our deceased relatives”, - BelaPAN quotes the statement of Slovak diplomatic mission.

It should be reminded that Belarusian public members celebrated the Day of memory of Stalin’s repressions victims in Belarus 29 October. The Day of memory was established by the public organizing committee on perpetuation the memory of Stalinism’s victims in memory of the events in 1937, when there was a climax of mass repressions. The representatives of public organizing committee held memorial actions in Kurapaty, restored the Cross of Martyrs and “Clinton’s bench” there. A rally and a meeting, timed to the Day of commemoration the ancestors (Dziady), took place 28 October. An art exhibition and presentation of three literature editions on this subject, taken place in Minsk, have been dedicated to the memory of victims of Stalin’s repressions.
