Are state shares in banks sold to Russians?

The chairman of the National Bank of Belarus Pyotr Prakapovich believes that one of the largest Russian banks, Alfa bank, can enter Belarusian market by buying a share in Mezhtorgbank belonging to National bank of Belarus (about 35 per cent the end of this year or in the first quarter of the year 2008).

“We have a hope that we shall manage to do it this year; otherwise we shall do it in the first quarter of the year 2008, not later,” Prakapovich said at a press-conference on Thursday answering Interfax news agency question about the terms of the deal with Alfa-bank.

The head of the National bank of Belarus has also informed that analogous terms are expected for a strategic investor of Belarusian Paritet bank, 95 per cent of shares in which belong to the National bank. However, P. Prakapovich hadn’t specified the investor he was speaking about.

Earlier AFK “Sistema” showed interest in buying Paritet bank. Its head recently discussed with A. Lukashenka prospects of advancing the corporation’s presence in Belarus.
