Andrei Sannikov: “Nothing stands behind quiet signals of the regime so far”

Today in Minsk Gernot Erler, Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Ministry, Bundestag deputies of CDU/CSU, SPD and Green factions, Gebhardt Weiss, the German ambassador to Belarus, workers of German Foreign Ministry have had a meeting with the Charter’97 international coordinator Andrei Sannikov, the chairman of the Belarusian Ppopular Front party Vintsuk Vyachorka, the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka and the head of the organizing committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Narodnaya Hramada) Mikola Statkevich. During the meeting politicians discussed the situation in Belarus and to what extent the Belarusian authorities are ready to fulfill recommendations of the EU offered a year ago.

Belarus is part of the European family, there is a consensus in Europe on the question of importance of Belarus for Europe. It was said by Helga Schmid, director of Policy Unit of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union on the Minsk Forum X on November, 24. H. Schmid welcomed the forum participants on behalf of Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy.
