Tadeusz Kandrusiewicz: Pope will come to Belarus when God will want it

10:14, — Religion

The ordinary of the Minsk-Magiliou catholic archediocese archbishop Tadeusz Kandrusiewicz is willing to assist singing the concordat between Belarus and Vatican.

“I’d be delighted to see Belarus and Vatican sign the concordat. This is a good matter, and I will assist it, if my help is needed,” archbishop Kandrusiewicz said at a press-conference held in Minsk, Interfax reports.

A concordat is an agreement between Vatican and one more state which regulates the legal position of the Catholic Church in this state. “If Belarus signs the concordat with Vatican, it will move to a new level in Europe,” he said.

Tadeusz Kandrusiewicz told journalists “Pope of Rome Benedict XVI can come to Belarus, but only when the God will want it.” “I’m going to Rome next week, and perhaps will have an audience with the Pope of Rome,” he added.

Kandrusiewicz is convinced that new catholic churches must be built in Minsk. “In Minsk, where a great number of Catholics live, there are few churches,” he said. “It would be wonderful if in Minsk there is a college or at least a department of theology. Minsk with more than 300 thousand Catholics needs a seminary, a college, and other Catholic educational establishments,” the archbishop added.

Kandrusiewicz also said that before he went to work to Moscow 16 years ago, he assisted opening of more than 100 Catholic churches and a seminary in Grodna region.
