US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has sharply criticized Belarus’ regime.
“The Belarus regime has stepped up persecution of the opposition and ordinary citizens pressing peacefully for change,” Rice said on Monday at the 2007 International Human Rights Day Awards Ceremony while presenting the 2007 Diplomacy for Freedom Award to Karen Stewart, the US Ambassador to Belarus.
Condoleezza Rice reminded that she had met Belarusian opposition delegation in Washington recently. “Last week, I had the honor to receive several Belarusian human rights and democracy advocates, who were greatly heartened by the efforts of the United States,” she said.
Ms Rice delivered the speech at the award-giving ceremony on the occasion of the Human Rights Day marked on Monday. A deputy Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Richard Lugar attended the ceremony as well.
