Mikalay Statkevich: “It’s KGB wishful thinking”

“I think that the statement of the KGB head is a message for the society and opposition. Something like: we know all of you, active oppositionists. One concentration camp will be enough for you. But there are a lot more of us, and March 19, 2006 have demonstrated that the number of active oppositionists is dozens times more,” told the chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Narodnaya Hramada), a coordinator of the European coalition Mikola Statkevich.

“We had a quiet laugh over the statement of the KGB chairman. The regime fears opposition otherwise so many efforts by them wouldn’t be underway. This statement is one of maneuvers in preparation to the election. I would recommend Zhadobin to give up wishful thinking,” Statkevich said.

As we have informed, the chairman of the KGB (State Security Committee) Yury Zhadobin spoke about the opposition at his first press-conference in the new position. He reported that foreign spies had been seized, and he added that he knows oppositionists by name, and they are 1,767 “destructive elements”, but they do not constitute any threat to the national security.
