German Ambassador: “Belarusian Elites Should Consider US Proposals”

Gebhardt Weiss, the German ambassador to Belarus, does not agree with the words of Alyaksandr Lukashenka that Europe has no desire to cooperate with Belarus. “Europe wants improvement of relations with Belarus. Opinions differ on what basis it could happen. If we analyze the 12 proposals of the EU, it is obvious that they contain many things which exist and are commonly accepted in Europe in the sphere of human rights, rule of law state, economy,” the diplomat noted.
According to the German ambassador, Belarus can develop effectively by directing their attention not only to the East, but to the EU as well.
“We have a concept of partnership. It is being realized with Ukraine and Moldova, but does not work with Belarus yet. The EU is a very interesting partner for Belarus for strategic interests’ realization. Besides, the young generation wants to get more convincing answers to the questions: “What our future will look like? In what country we shall live and in what kind of structures?” Elites, those who are responsible for the future of the country, should think how to response to the EU proposals. We do not advance by reflexes of resistance,” Gebhardt Weiss said.
