Situation in Belarus to be discussed in Strasbourg

Political Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) takes place today in Strasbourg.
The European deputies are to examine a draft report on the situation in Belarus. Italian MP Andrea Rigoni, Rapporteur on Belarus prepared the draft. He visited Minsk in October.
Two Belarusian delegations were invited to Strasbourg. The official authorities are represented by the members of the so called national assembly Natallya Andreichyk and Alyaksandr Arkhipau, the opposition is represented by Vintsuk Vyachorka and Viktar Karnyayenka. Both delegations will have an opportunity to express their opinions to the members of the Committee.
Vintsuk Vyachorka, first deputy head of the Belarusian Popular Front, answers the question of Radio Svaboda about his speech to the European MP:
“I will begin with the information about mass arrests of the youth. About leaders of entrepreneurs and political parties, and the youth, who are in prison on Akrestin Street now.”
Politologist Alyaksandr Lagvinets thinks the today’s session in Strasbourg is a clear sign that Europe still has interest in Belarus:
“Various attempts to regulate the Belarusian issue are being made. It’s clear, that the authorities want to play own game, because they want to legitimate their so called legislative body by the international community. If speaking about Mr. Rigoni’s report, the report I’ve read can be called a rather restrained one.
