Belarusians don’t want peaceful atom

4

A group of public activists from Gomel organised an impromptu poll on Gomel streets on construction a nuclear power plant in Belarus on 24 January.

As BelaPAN has learnt, the participants of the action offered passers-by to fill in a ballot and put it into a makeshift ballot-box.

“We decided to ask people a question, the authorities forgot to ask. Such an important decision as construction of a nuclear power plant shouldn’t be taken without participation of the people. Such question should be put to a poll, but the government hasn’t done it. We hope it finally follows the public initiative and organises a real poll on this issue,” one of the participants of the action noted.

According to the organisers, 68 ballots were collected during a short polling. 21 people voted for construction of the nuclear plant, with 47 against (30,8 per cent and 69,2 per cent respectively).

Meanwhile the activists from Gorki district have already collected over 500 votes of local inhabitants against construction of the nuclear plant.
