Ales Makaeu: In prison we were singing “Mighty God”

A member of the coordinating council of small businessmen Ales Makaeu has been discharged from prison in Aktrestsun Street. He was on hunger strike of protest for 15 days.
Ales Makaeu was arrested on January 12 right after a talk with a deputy head of Main directorate of internal affairs Alyaksandr Najdzenka about conditions of incarceration of prisoners in the special detention facility in Akrestsin Street in Minsk which took place in Minsk City Executive committee. He was arrested because he allegedly used foul language.
“My demands in the hunger strike where to reverse part 1.1 of the Decree No.760. The second demand was to total lawlessness and arbitrary decisions actions of police and court. The third demand was to improve conditions in the detention center in Akrestsin Street,” Makaeu said in an interview to Radio Svaboda.
How the hunger strike in Akrestsin Street was going on?
“A doctor invited me, but I was on hunger strike, I had epigastric burning, a headache. I had medicine Synkapton, I had a permission for that. The doctor wrote that I had no complaints, that I was healthy. By the way, Taystyka and Parsyukevich went on hunger strike as well,” Makaeu said.
Some other arrested for participation in the protest rally of market vendors were in one cell with Ales Makaeu (Karen Akopau, Zmitser Khvedruk and Vital Stazharau). They held a day of solidarity, when all cell-mates refused to eat. Mr. Makaeu says that guys are looking on the sunny side of things.
“We were singing “Mighty God” in the cell in the morning. We were not allowed that earlier. But we were signing all the same”.
Ales Makaeu said that incarceration conditions in Akrestsin Street detention center are awful.
“Though they allowed bringing a coat to me additionally, nevertheless it was cold. There is no daylight and radio there”.
Ales Makaeu said that small businessmen should prepare for new protest rallies.
