Fight for freedom (Photo)

A fight for freedom of political prisoners continued in the first days of 2008 in Minsk. Portraits of the young leader Artur Finkevich were attached to New Year trees, and grafiti painted on multistory buildings.

A slogan “Freedom to Finkevich!” was written on a multi-storeyed building near Mahilyouskaya metro station in Partyzanski Avenue.

The writing was made from top downward in rather large letters, so it is seen fairly well from the so-called “Red house” in Varvashenya Street, and from the bus stop opposite the building. Thus, the Young Front continues its daily campaign for release of one of its leaders, Artur Finkevich, who had been sentenced to a year and a half of imprisonment.

On December 31 before the New Year portraits of the youngest political prisoner of Belarus, Artur Finkevich, appeared on New Year trees in the center of Minsk and in some parts of the city.

It should be added that many people stopped and read leaflets with information about the criminal prosecution of the Young Front leader. As we have informed, Artur Finkevich was sentenced to a year and a half right after having served a two year sentence in the so-called corrective labour facility in Mahilyou. After persistent threats and intimidation by KGB officers, after Artur’s determined denial to “collaborate” with punitive agencies, the Young Front activist was flung into an isolation ward. Another fabricated case was brought up against him. It finished in execution of a politically motivated order and a 1.5 year term to one of the Young Front leaders.
