The US Embassy in Belarus has commented the statement by Alyaksandr Lukashenka of December 30. The US have been continuously informing the Belarusian authorities that they would extend taking steps against Belarusian officials and those who are in charge of human rights violations, corruption and crackdown on democracy used as a means to keep the power, the US Ambassador said.
“We are prepared to take appropriate action against entities owned or controlled by such persons (who abuse human rights)”. The statement by the US Ambassador Karen Stewart at a press-conference on December 13 was made in full conformity with the US policy.
“The key to improved U.S.-Belarus relations remains in Belarussian hands -- the release of all political prisoners and its respect for basic democratic norms, including free elections and freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association,” the official said.
On December 30 Alyaksandr Lukashenka threatened to expel the US Ambassador in case the US imposes new sanctions against Belarus. Alyaksandr Lukashenka stated:
“As soon as considerable sanctions would be imposed against our economy, we would react in a very harsh manner in all directions: in politics, economy and other spheres. the US Ambassador will be the first person to be expelled”.
Earlier the US Ambassador stated at a press-conference in Minsk that the US government would consider imposing additional sanctions against Belarusian enterprises in 2008.
