Carbines, grenades and gas against people (photo, video)

Police used KS-23 carbines, aerosol hand-grenades Dreif and tear gas Cheryumukha-1 and Cheryumukha-6, rubber truncheons PR-73 on 25 March, 2006. It can be concluded from the article “Non-fatal case” published today in the newspaper of the President’s Administration “Savetskaya Belorussia.” In spite of evident facts (see photo), police Lieutenant Colonel Vasili Svistunou, deputy chief of the special police squad of the city internal affairs department at the city executive committee, who showed journalist Tatyana Shchadronak special police weapon, denies this fact.

“By the way, stun and gas devices as well as water cannons have never been used in riot control, only in training. We hope we won’t use them in real situations,” he states.

That is what the journalist writes about KS-23 shotguns

KS-23 carbine looks like a dangerous weapon. I take this “toy” and feel that it is too heavy for me to aim. But appearance is deceitful. “KS is loaded with gas or rubber baton rounds,” police Lieutenant Colonel Vasili Svistunou instructs me.

This weapon can destroy the will to resist of an armed criminal, but can’t kill him. For example, a badman has sheltered in an apartment of a multistorey house. He can open fire. A carbine with gas and ribbon bullets is able to unarm easily the originator of turmoil. A soldier shoots at a distance 50 meters (he is supposed to be in an opposite house) and gas bullet penetrates double glass window, rebounds from the ceiling, falls down, and a grey cloud fills the room. It’s impossible to stay in the room even at a distance of 10 meters from the bullet. One bursts into tears and has fire in throat. One can only fell sorry for a person, who is in the center of the cloud. Concentration of a tear gas in the explosion epicentre can disable even an elephant. I wouldn’t recommend to provoke using of KS from policemen.

Dreif aerosol hand-grenades are next in turn

One bullet can’t influence the situation in riot. A more powerful device is needed. Dreif aerosol hand-grenades is quite the thing. Volume of aerosol cloud, causing sensory irritation, is up to 50 cubic meters. Some grenades will be enough for an average city square.

And now about “Cheremukha” (CN)

The closest “relative” of Dreif is a tear gas from “Cheremukha” family. Special police is armed by aerosol hand-grenades Cheremukha-1 and Cheremukha-6. Their principle of action is as following: when the grenade is dropped a fuse releases chemicals, and an acid smoke is emitted from the grenade body. Unlike Cheremukha-1, Cheremukha-6 grenade has an undisputed advantage: a plastic cylinder cannot be gripped and thrown away: it spins like a top.

Other non-lethal weapons

Imagine a wild roaring of a motorcycle of a biker. Comparing with the sound effect of some non-lethal weapons, the sound of operating engine is a buzz of a bee. I have become certain myself. The stun device “Zarya-2” is so tiny that it can be placed on a palm of a hand. Meanwhile, this tiny thing can emit sound of 172 Decibel. Additional effect is a blinding flash of light. Combined with the sound it is an experience not for the faint-hearted. Your heart leaps into your boots. A miniature “Zarya”, as experts say, is simply indispensable during buildings storming.

A stun grenade “Teren-7M” is good as it is suitable for multiple use. A metallic cylinder has a filling with powerful pyrotechnic effect. “Fireworks”, especially in darkness, is so strong that a person near the explosion is stunned for several seconds. “Teren” is almost as spectacular as a volcanic eruption. One grenade can cause a panic of a vast number of people.

A special car “Tsunami” would cool down ardour in no time. Up to 7 tons of water are contained in a reserve tank. Two nose-pieces are working simultaneously. The range of a stream is 100 meters. What is worth mentioning, unlike non-lethal weapons mentioned earlier, “cold douche” is a development of Belarusians based on MAZ truck.

Rules of disbanding demonstrations

One should add that deploying of all these weapons is subject to strict regulations. In order to use Dreif or Zarya, one should get special permission.

“During unsanctioned mass rallies a headquarters is created to be in charge of actions of the police,” Vasil Svistunou tells about legal nuances. “The headquarters commander orders what tactics to use. Proceeding from the situation, at their discretion our officers can use rubber truncheons PR-73, handcuffs and gas spray. As for other kinds of non-lethal weapons, an order of a commander is needed. By the way, regiment’s fighting men have never used stun grenades, gas and water weapons during street riots. They used them only during training”.

25.03.2006 – facts

More than 10,000 Belarusian citizens have taken to the streets on March 25 in Minsk to celebrate Freedom Day. Thousands of policemen and riot policemen were hurled against peaceful protesters, all array of special means was used: rubber bullets, smoke-grenades, noise-making explosives and teargas. Peacefully protesting people were beaten up until they were bleeding and unconscious, many people were carried away in stretchers by doctors. The dictatorship has proved again that it rests only on force. Flowers and peaceful slogans were opposed by weapons.

The celebration of Freedom Day was to start at 12 noon on October Square in Minsk. But the square was cordoned off by police and riot police, and fenced by special railing. However, thousands of people managed to gather in the streets by October Square. Thousands of law-enforcers were sent to the streets: riot policemen, policemen and internal troops. Skaryna Avenue was closed to traffic completely.

After several futile attempts to come to Skaryna Avenue, columns of people moved along Nyamiha Avenue and Bahdanovich Avenue to Yanka Kupala Park, where the single candidate Alyaksandr Milinkevich arrived. Columns of people from different parts of the city under national flags marched and chanted in unison: “Freedom!”

About 10,000 protesters gathered in the park of Yanka Kupala. A candidate for presidency, former BSU rector Alyaksandr Kazulin, called upon the protesters to go to the special detention center in Akrestsin Street after the meeting, to “demand release of the new heroes of Belarus”. After the meeting, the 10-thousand column of demonstrators headed for the special detention center in Akrestsina Street, scanning “Glory For Heroes!” and “Freedom For Political Prisoners!” The peaceful demonstration was halted by cordons of the OMON (riot police), anti-terrorist commandos and interior troops who blocked the traffic near the Maskouski district administration. The Special Forces officers attacked the peaceful demonstrators, who were walking with flowers and balloons, with brutal ferocity. Special Forces commander Zmitser Paulichenka, suspected by the world community of murders and kidnapping of oppositional leaders, was the one to give orders.

All possible means were used against the demonstrators - smoke boxes, stun grenades, tear-gas. The grenades were exploding right above the people’s heads. Bleeding demonstrators were carried away in stretchers. The majority had their heads crushed. Special Forces officers finished what the grenades hadn’t done. They assaulted the people, dragged them by hair and hit with clubs the people’s heads, backs, legs. The girls were beaten with fists into faces.

The beaten and bleeding people were then loaded to paddy wagons and driven in unknown direction. More than a hundred of participants of the peaceful protest rally were arrested then. Minsk court sentenced Alyaksandr Kazulin to 5.5 years of imprisonment. He is still serving the term.
