Lukashenka: “Year 2008 will be challenging”

Alyaksandr Lukashenka believes that the year 2008 will not be easy for Belarus and urges citizens to come down to work vigorously after New Year's holidays. "The year will not be easy, it will be difficult - not because prices for gas and oil will be rising, or because we will be experiencing shortages. This will be so, because the world is developing this way," Lukashenka said at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Minsk on Monday, where a Christmas service is being conducted.

He stressed that the country is obliged to accomplish a serious breakthrough in economic development this year. “Life demands it,” he said, and the country is facing difficult but necessary tasks this year. “It would be simpler if there was no pressure from competitors,” he observed.

At the same time, he said pressure on the new state by other countries is explicable, but he said this pressure is sometimes undeserved. He said this resentment by other countries breeds pressure.

“The powerful in this world do not like it when smaller states begin to make themselves heard… We have to look on that calmly and continue with our business,” Lukashenka said. He said that he has begun to react to it less himself.

Lukashenka has also stated that the country is facing the task to improve welfare of its people considerably. The Belarusian ruler has noted that according forecast of international experts, growth of prices for food is to continue this year. He added that prices growth is favourable for Belarus from the point of view of food export.

Lukashenka has also draw attention to unquiet situation and conflicts expansion in the world. He underlined a necessity to shield Belarus from these negative tendencies. “We cannot let political disturbances, injustices existing around us, in our house”.
