US State Department representative: “There is not enough freedom of choice freedom of expression and freedom of speech in Belarus”

Sean McCormack, spokesman for the Department of State, answering the question of “Narodnaya Volya” about further relations between Belarus and the US, stated that “not much has changed in the country functionally”.

“We follow the events in Belarus carefully,” the influential US official said. “And we believe that so far there is not enough freedom of choice freedom of expression and freedom of speech. Recently the Belarusian authorities released political prisoners, but not much has changed functionally. If further steps forward would follow, if there is more choice, there would be more possibilities for development of relations between our countries. Everything depends on the Belarusian authorities…”

However, Sean McCormack hasn’t specified when exactly visa sanctions against Belarusian officials would be lifted.
