Polish president met Chair of Union of Poles in Belarus

Polish president Lech Kaczynski met with the chair of the non-recognized Union of Poles in Belarus Anzelika Borys.

After the meeting Mr Kaczynski stated that the merger of the Union of Poles with another Union of Poles controlled by the Belarusian regime is “unacceptable”.

“We, the Polish state, cannot use certain preferences of our fellow members of the EU for a special treatment of the countries which are situated to the East of Poland, we cannot use that in the way to use the regimes which do not deserve that. And far less can we interfere in the affairs of the authentic organisation of Polish minority that works well. And we were talking about that,” Lech Kaczynski said.

As Radio Svaboda informs, the Polish President has also underlined that “improvement of relations with Belarus is a good thing, but only under certain conditions”.

In her turn, Anzelika Borys noted that the situation with Poles in Belarus depends on good cooperation between Poland and Belarus.

“Now how it would be, would depend on the Belarusian authorities exclusively. The time will tell, which concrete measures and steps would be made by them, besides just statements” she noted.
