Campaigners to collect signatures against construction of nuclear power plant in Cherykaw district

16

Campaigners plan to start collecting signatures to a petition urging the government to abandon its plans to build a nuclear power plant from residents of the Cherykaw district, Mahilyow region.

As Raman Razhdzestvenski, the organizer of the campaign, told BelaPAN, the collection of signatures will begin “in the near future.”

The campaign has been organized by the same group that has already collected more than 1,300 signatures to a similar petition in the Mahilyow region’s Horki district.

“We don’t want to be sitting on a powder keg, waiting for another disaster to break out,” the petition reads. “We call on the president, the government and the parliament to repeal the decision and to redirect the allocated funds toward developing safe power supply technologies.”

Eduard Brokaraw, spokesman for the group, said that it would continue gathering signatures to the petition until the government abandoned the nuclear power program.

Government experts currently consider a few sites for the construction of the plant, with one of them located near Bykhaw, Mahilyow region, and another between Horki and Shklow also in the Mahilyow region, which was affected worst in Belarus by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster along with the Homyel region.

The construction of the $4-billion power plant is expected to begin next year and to be completed in 2018. The 2,000-MWt plant is supposed to supply some 15 percent of the country’s electricity needs.
