The Prosecutor General Ryhor Vasilevich personally received petition of human rights activists asking for Alyaksandr Kazulin a short-term leave for attending his wife’s funeral. As said by Ihar Rynkevich, Vasilevich had given to understand clearly that the office of the Prosecutor General cannot influence the decision in this question.
On February 25 the chairman of the legal commission of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Harry Pahanyajla and a human rights activist Alena Tankachova met with the Prosecutor General Vasilevich and submitted a letter to him with a request to grant a leave to prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin so that he could attend funeral of his wife. In the request addressed also to Interior Affairs minister and the head of the Penal Jurisdiction department, human rights activists ask to demonstrate humanity to politician and his family.
“It was a rather short meeting,” the former lawyer of A. Kazulin, Ihar Rynkevich said to “Salidarnasts”. “The fact that Vasilevich received the human rights activists personally, and that he received us rather quickly, is a good thing. But the Prosecutor general has made himself clear that the Prosecutor General’s office cannot play any positive role in this question. However, he assured that the message has been heard.
