Yanukovych: European integration can unite government and opposition

The leader of the Party of Regions Viktor Yanukovych believes that the issue of integration of Ukraine into the European Union could unite the opposition and the governing coalition.
Yanukovych stated this yesterday in Brussels during the meeting with the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the EU Javier Solana.
During the meeting the sides paid much attention to the issues of Ukraine’s European integration and concluding a new EU-Ukraine treaty. Yanukovych favourably views the progress achieved in the talks on the new Enhanced agreement EU-Ukraine over the year 2007.
“We have passed almost half a way in the negotiations process. It is getting more and more difficult, as it demands more compromises from the sides,” the leader of the Party of Regions said.
“Despite of the serious disagreement on the issues of the internal policy, a consensus on our strategic course of European integration exists in Ukraine. We understand perfectly well that we should invest a lot of effort to reach certain criteria to claim the membership in the EU”.
“The Ukrainain side is satisfied with the successful implementation of the Actions Plan Uklraine-Eu, which has allowed us to raise our relations to a new level. But it is important for us today to speak about realization of the Actions Plan not only by Ukraine, but by the EU as well,” Yanukovych said.
Yanukovych has noted that the question of Ukraine’s integration to the EU should be solved by joint efforts of the opposition and the governing coalition.
