Last time the performance of the play “Tutejshyja” (or “The Locals”) by a Belarusian classic Yanka Kupala took place in July 2007. Since then the play never appeared at the theatre’s bills.
Rumours that the play is to be banned on ideological grounds were heard long ago. It’s not a secret that for some officials “Tutejshyja” sticks in gizzard of the regime. Parallels with the today’s situation and a white-red-white flag in the final scene accompanied by viewers’ chanting “Long live Belarus!” made presidential ideologists very nervous.
“Salidarnasts” tried to find out the future of “Tutejshyja”.
“Nothing is happening still,” told the assistant of the treatre’s head Vadzim Dapkiunas. “We didn’t start rehearsing the play, but there is a wish for it to stay on the repertoire”.
“When will we see the play “Tutejshyja” on the stage?”
“I do not want to mislead you about the terms. It is still unknown. The play needs a period of rehearsals, and it needs time and money”.
