Andrei Sannikov: “Kremlin plans creeping subjugation of Belarus to its interests”

“No changes in relations of the Kremlin to Belarus can be expected after the presidential election. Most likely, the Kremlin plans are a creeping subjugation of Belarus to its interests, including Belarus into the scenario of the Russian policy, both domestic and foreign one,” stated the international coordinator of the Charter’97 press-center, a member of the organising of the civil campaign “European Belarus” Andrei Sannikov.

“The calm and inconspicuous development of elections in Russia, absence of any competition between the candidates speaks for itself. In fact, though there are 4 candidates, it was a non-alternative election which maintained power in the hands of the current ruling group. Most probably, favours given to Lukashenka before the presidential elections would be gradually annulled, and the regime won’t be able to get economic allowances without fulfillment of Russia’s conditions. It is most likely that the issue of oil and gas prices, credit payments, tax dues and quotas for Belarusian goods would come up,” the diplomat believes.

Mr. Sannikov is convinced that Russia would try to prevent both the democratic processes inside Belarus and development of relations between Belarus and Europe.

“This all once again underlines the necessity of radical rethink of Belarusian policy and more active line for rapprochement with Europe. It is Europe where understandable and transparent rules in all spheres exist, and primarily in trade and economy sphere. They have been adopted by all states of the European Union (and there are 27 of them now), which allows to develop successfully not only to these states, but to the countries who are involved in full-fledged cooperation with Europe as well,” believes the member of the organizing committee of “European Belarus” campaign.
