Activist fined over 1 mln Br for protest against toxic chemicals plant construction

The court of Pukhavichy district ahs punished the dweller of Druzhny settlement Syarhei Abrazouski with a fine of 1 mln Belarusian rubles. He was charged with staging an unsanctioned rally against construction of a chemical plant. Mr. Abrazouski pleaded not guilty, as said he would challenge the verdict.
The unsanctioned rally of dwellers of the settlement of Druzhny Pukhavichy district took place on March 22. Activists of an imitative group against construction of the plant for producing toxic chemicals addressed local authorities many times, but they hadn’t been granted permission, Radio Svaboda informs.
The toxic chemicals plant is to be planned by Russian private company Avgust-Bel. The plant is to produce several kinds of pesticide chemicals. Experts say that the plant has the highest level of danger. Dwellers of the settlements of Druzhny, Svislach, Rudzensk, Dukora and others protest against the plant’s construction.
Activists of the initiative group are maintaining correspondence with all ministries and agencies engaged for about a year. People do not trust officials’ statements that the plant is safe, and demand independent technological and environmental impact audit, and a local referendum on expediency of presence of the hazardous plant in the immediate proximity of urban settlements.
