Human bones from Jewish cemetery in Homel thrown into city dump (Photo)

Anxious information appears about barbarian treatment to remains of Jews, buried on an old Jewish cemetery in Homel.

The question is in graves of people, whose identification was lost after soviet “fighters with religious obscurantism” levelled the cemetery with the ground in 1961 and constructed a stadium on the human bones, Seventh Channel informs.

This March Homel city authorities decided to re-construct the decayed sporting complex and drove heavy construction equipment to the territory of the ruined Jewish cemetery. On the first day of constructive-restoration works excavator bucket dig out gravestones with inscriptions in Hebrew, and many bones and skulls.

As a correspondent of the Jewish News Agency (JNA) reports from Homel, “Unfortunately, Jewish city community and, by the way, other city services, showed impressing indifference to the events.” The only enthusiast, who literally, followed an excavator and collected skulls and bones into bags, was Yauhen Malikau, local Belarusian historian.

“The collected remains are staying in bags on a construction site for some weeks,” Yauhen Malikau said in the interview to JNA correspondent, which was published on the agency site 11 April. “A part of dig out bones was thrown aside by builders. But how much of them were removed with rubbish?”

The portal “MIG-news” has painted the situation in even more grave tones in an article published on April 13. “Workers who had been carrying out the reconstruction of the stadium constructed at the place of Jewish cemetery which appeared in 18 century, have stated that they have no choice but to throw away bones to the city dump,” the reporting reads. “It is impossible to pack into bags the whole cemetery,” a worker Mikhail Hubets said, adding that he finished counting sculls when their number exceeded 100”.

Meanwhile, Jewish New Agency web-source has informed that a visit of Homel city executive committee official was planned for April 11. He promised representatives of the Jewish community of the city to “see into the matter”.

However, it looks like after the visit of Homel state official, the situation hasn’t moved off dead center, in all senses. In the leadership of influential Jewish organizations won’t get involved, as well as Israeli Embassy in Belarus, the desecration of remains of Homel Jews would continue.
