The prosecutor’s office of Minsk considers searches in the apartments of independent journalists on March 27 and 28 “have taken place reasonably and in correspondence to the law”. It has been stated in the letter from the prosecutor’s office received by the Belarusian Association of Journalists as a reply to their addresses.
As stated by the head of investigation department of the prosecutor’s office of Minsk Syarhei Ivanou, who signed the letter, searches had been held in the framework of a previous investigation of a criminal action for libel against the president (Art. 367 Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Belarus) against citizens A. Minich, P. Marozau and A. Abozau.
“Your addresses… have been considered and filed,” investigator Ivanou writes.
Thus, the answer from the prosecutor’s office again varies from the comment by the head of the press-service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Maryja Vanshyna on March 27. Her words meant that the searches were related to activities of journalists of non-accredited foreign mass media.
