Rector of BSEU Shymau decided not to expel Young Front activist for the present 11

An activist of the Young Front Maulyuda Atakulava was summoned to the rector of the Belarusian State Economic University Shymau. After a conversation with the student, when he talked to her “like to a granddaughter”, the rector decided not to expel her.

Maulyuda herself was especially pleased by students’ solidarity. Over a short period of time about 150 signatures have been gathered in her support. The student of the 3 year of the Higher School of Tourism faced expulsion for her activism, the web-site Generation.By informs.

On March 17 a session of a special commission on legal education and crimes prevention took place. Among them were Dean Mikhalay Kabushkin and deputy rector Syarhei Shauruk. The commission has adopted a decision to ask the rector to expel Maulyuda.

On April 22 Uladzimir Shymau met with the student. For about an hour he discussed with Maulyuda Atakulava her activities, read her character reference.

“I was greatly surprised. It seemed to me that the dean was well disposed towards me. But there were many unpleasant things in my character reference, for instance, that I “talk cynically,” Maulyuda said.

The rector also explained Maulyuda why a student Tatsyana Khoma was expelled from the BSEU in 2005.

Though Atakulava is to continue education at the faculty of the Higher School of Tourism, students are still collecting signatures in her support.

“Firstly, I am thankful to students who had supported me. I hope there won’t be any pressure from the dean’s office on them. Now I will be getting ready for the session exams, however I do not give up on numerous social activities,” the girl said.

The rector Uladzimir Shymau is notorious for expulsion of Tatsyana Khoma in 2005. Neither international campaign nor students’ solidarity had helped her then. Tatsyana was elected a member of the Council of the largest students’ organisation of Europe, ESU, and was expelled from the Belarusian State Economic University in a few days.

Tatsyana failed to be reinstated in the university through a court, and she was forced to leave for Austria. This year, learning that Shymau in a capacity of a former Economy minister visits Vienna, Austrian students prepared a protest. For the first time the rector had to make excuses for Tatsyana Khoma’s expulsion publicly.
