Charnobyl Way – to Independence Square

A session of the organising committee on preparation for Charnobyl Way was held in Minsk. Terms and route of the action were determined.
It was decided that participants of the street event should gather at the Academy of Sciences at 2.00pm 26 April. It is planned the rally will take the route towards Independence Square, the site milinkevich.org reports.
Viktar Karnyaenka, deputy head of the “For Freedom” movement thinks the route has a symbolical meaning:
– It was the route of the first Charnobyl Way in 1989. Among its participants were scientist of the USSR Academy of Sciences Yauhen Velikhau, famous Belarusian writer and true patriot Ales Adamovich, politician Stanislau Shushkevich. It was important that people, political parties and Belarusian authorities had similar post-disaster assessments. People consolidated and the action was held without confrontations.
It was decided Charnobyl Way this year will be held under slogans of disagreement with nuclear power plant construction without national discussion and control. The action will also demand to provide health care for the population and return social guarantees to people, suffered from the disaster, including liquidators of the Charnobyl nuclear accident.
It is planned to send the application to the Minsk city executive committee by next Wednesday. The application will be signed by Alyaksandr Milinkevich, leader of the “For Freedom” movement, representatives of the Belarusian Popular Front party, United Civil Party, Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) and public organisations.
