Alyaksandr Sasnou: “Only ‘marionette’ opposition can get into ‘parliament’” 2

11:57, — Politics

Recently Alyaksandr Lukashenka stated that he would be glad to see at least a few oppositionists in the ‘parliament’.

Experts of “Zavtra tvoej strany” forecast whether oppositionists will get into the “chamber of representatives”, and whether they should run as candidates for parliamentary elections.

“Opposition won’t be allowed to be elected to the parliament, and even if some people would get there, and would be called oppositionists, in reality they would be yes-men,” believes the former chairman of the “council of republic” of the “national assembly” of Belarus Alyaksandr Vajtovich.

“Only ‘puppet opposition’ like Volha Abramava could be elected to the parliament. And besides, the number [of MPs] will be scarce,” believes the former Labour Minister Alyaksandr Sasnou.

According to “Zavtra tvoej strany” experts, it could be done with only one aim, to pretend that there is presence of opposition in the ‘chamber of representatives’.

“Actually, neither opposition nor parliament is needed by Lukashenka. He just wants to pretend that he is a democrat like all others, he is just as good as others, and he is in no way a dictator or tyrant,” Alyaksandr Sasnou is convinced. “Lukashenka is not even ready for creation of pro-regime party, his position is always directed against parties, which has been demonstrated by is recent harsh statements concerning “Belaya Rus” organisation, which markets itself as a pro-president organisation.

As believed by the chairman of the United Civil party Anatol Lyabedzka, as a first step one should understand what is meant by the word ‘opposition’.

“It cannot be excluded that by this brand Lukashenka means some persons or structures which have no connection to the United Democratic Forces, a consolidated structure in opposition to the current regime today. If Hajdukevich is meant for instance, we are speaking about different things,” the politician said. “And secondly, it’s not a new thing that the administration considers several scenarios, and one on them is to “allow” several persons representing the United Democratic Forces, into the ‘chamber of representatives’. These would be certainly not the first persons of organisations. But they could be people with democratic views indeed.

According to the UCP leader, there won’t be many of such people; they won’t be dangerous for the personal power of the present head of the state.

“But it would give a possibility to demonstrate them as a museum specimen during visits of foreign delegations to Belarus,” Anatol Lyabedzka said. “There are certain advantages for the regime in that as well, so this topic hasn’t been taken off from the agenda”.
