Low activity of nomination of candidates for deputies of the “house of representatives” during the “election campaign” can negatively affect participating in voting. Head of the Belarusian Election Commission Lidziya Yarmoshyna told in an interview to BelTA. Only 365 people applied for MP mandate during this election against more then 600 ones during the latest “parliamentary campaign”.
”This low activity of candidates doesn’t encourage voters to be interested in political campaign and visit polling stations,” Yarmoshyna fears.
Earlier, the CEC head said with certainty that there would be no problems with voter turnout, the AFN reminds. In her view, low activity has natural causes in the background. “It is not enforced will, but social and political development of the society,” she stressed.
“But we conduct election when we must hold it according to the election law, not when the conditions are ready,” Yarmoshyna concluded.
Besides, as the Charter’97 press center has already informed, if opposition politicians decide to withdraw their candidatures, there will be average two candidates for a parliamentary seat. Now non-alternative election will be held in at least 6 electoral districts. The number of such districts can increase after opposition candidates withdraw their candidatures.
