Lyaukovich getting ready for presidential election
15- 4.08.2008, 10:09
Anatol Lyaukovich, new head of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) said the yesterday’s party session and the so called parliamentary campaign was a beginning of the future presidential campaign.
It should be reminded that this BSDP session was planned as a technical one where candidates for “MPs” were to be nominated.
However, most of the delegates (there gathered 76 from 86 people) demanded to put an issue on election of the party leader on the agenda. Four persons were proposed for the position. But Aleh Trusau and Mechyslau Hryb refused to run. There remained two candidates: party head political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin and acting party head Anatol Lyaukovich.
There were 53 votes in favour of Lyaukovich and 22 against. Alyaksandr Kazulin was announced an honour member of the party.
Mr Lyaukovich told to Radio Svaboda about the prospects for the party:
“The situation in the party is stable. It is a good base for its dynamic development and strengthening. This session and the “parliamentary campaign” is the beginning of the future presidential campaign for our party. There’s no much time. The party should participate actively in proposing promising candidates for the highest post. Most of the party members are sure the party will be ready for the presidential election,“ he said.
