Is it quiet, as something is hushed?

The Central Election Commission of Belarus notes that the parliamentary electoral campaign has a quiet nature, while opposition representatives disprove this statement, saying about crackdown on them by the regime.

“The campaign is carried out peacefully, in a quiet manner, without any incidents, which makes one sad after all. Even our [usual] complainants are silent,” the CEC secretary Nikalay Lazovik said to the agency Interfax-Zapad.

As said by him, for today “there are no setbacks or emergency situations in the electoral process have been documented”. “The only thing is, there are complaints about problems of collection of signatures in support of nomination of candidates for deputy in cities,” N. Lazovik said.

The CEC secretary reminded that on Sunday august 10 nomination of candidates in about 6.5 thousand constituency electoral commissions ends. “We recommended the executive committees to work on that day, they worked and received documents,” the CEC representative said.

In his turn, the chairman of the United Civil party Anatol Lyabedzka does not agree with the opinion of members of the CEC that the electoral campaign is carried out in a quiet manner. “Maybe it is quiet in the offices of Lazovik and Yarmoshyna, but the situation is different with us,” the UCP leader noted. “Almost every day we receive information about detentions of our representatives by law-enforcing agencies, and that our activists are summoned to appear in the KGB,” A. Lyabedzka said.

As said by him, “one could agree that the campaign is carried out silently, in a sense that this topic is almost absent in the state-run mass media”.

Speaking about nomination of their representatives to district electoral commissions, A. Lyabedzka said that “we do not charge the regime with impossible tasks”. “We offer to include our representatives to district electoral commissions there where our candidates run in the election; one representative in each constituency,” the UCP leader told.
