The former vice premier of Russia compares cooperation between Belarus and Russia within the frame of the Customs Union with a failed Hitler–Mussolini union.
Former Russian vice premier Boris Nemtsov commented Radio Svaboda on an arrangement of the heads of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia on establishing a common economic area from January 1, 2010 as part of the Customs Union.
“I do not believe in unions between dictatorial leaders. Authoritarian leaders are inclined to usurp power and not inclined to delegate a part of their power to anyone. Neither Hitler and Mussolini nor Lukashenka and Putin had a normal union. These declarations, oaths of friendship are for the naive. How long have they been fooling us with “Belarusian–Russian union”? Where’s this “union”? I don’t see it. if we want any economic integration the only chance is democratization of Russia, democratization of Belarus, democratization of Kazakhstan. Without this, all Almaty agreements are talking to the wind,” Boris Nemtsov noted.
