Plans of military cooperation with Moscow to be discussed in Minsk

On April 6-7 a Russian military delegation headed by Nikolay Makarov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, is to visit Belarus.

As informed by BelaPAN, meetings of Nikolay Makarov with the Defense Minister of Belarus Leanid Maltsau and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus Syarhei Hurulyou are planned.

A number of issues are to be discussed during the visit. They are to concern the state and prospects of the military cooperation of the two states. Among the most important issues is preparation of the joint strategic exercise “Zapad-2009” (“West-2009”).

Belarusian-Russian strategic exercise West-2009 is to take place in autumn in Belarus.

The idea of the exercise includes variants of military conflicts of the recent decades and modern approach to prevention and repulsing of acts of aggression.

According to preliminary estimations, the exercise will involve around 13,000 military men in Belarus, including around 6,000-7,000 troops of the Belarusian Armed Forces and some 5,000-6,000 men of the Russian Armed Forces.

Several Russian army units from several military districts of Russia are supposed to arrive in Belarus to participate in the army exercise.

As we have informed, on February 3, 2009 Dmitry Medvedev and Alyaksandr Lukashenka signed an agreement on common defense of external borders of the “union state” and creation of the common regional air defense system of Belarus and Russia.
