Former Polish Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek became first representative of Eastern Europe who has headed the European Parliament.
555 MEPs voted for 69-year-old Jerzy Buzek. His contender Swede Eva-Britt Svensson got only 89 votes.
Jerzy Buzek was born in 1940, graduated from the Silesian University of Technology. He became activist of Solidarity trade union in 1980, was prime minister of Poland in 1997–2001, has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004.
The elections to the European Parliament were held on June 4–7. The European People’s Party, represented by Buzek, got 264 seats, European socialists won 161 seats. The assembly has 736 seats. The biggest fractions agreed that a representative of the European People’s Party would head the EP the first half of the term (2.5 years) and then a representative of European socialists would take presidency.
