The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that one more citizen of Ukraine was detained at protest rally in Minsk on December 19.

Kyiv insists on immediate release of the detained Ukrainians, “Korrespondent” reports.

“Yesterday evening the Ukrainian Embassy in Belarus found out that one more citizen of Ukraine arrested on December 19 on the Election Day is kept in the remand prison,” the press-secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Aleksandr Dikusarov said.

He added that official reports of the Belarusian side about detention of the second Ukrainian had not been received, which contradicts the consular convention of January 20, 2009 between Ukraine and Belarus.

Dikusarov explained that according to that document, relevant authorities of the country of residence are to inform about detention, arrest or any other restriction of freedom of a citizen the appropriate consular official of the other country in the shortest possible time, but not more than 4 days after these measures are taken.

The Foreign Ministry insists on immediate release of the Ukrainians detained during the protest rally in Belarus. In particular, on December 29 Belarusian Ambassador to Ukraine Valyantsin Vyalichka was invited to the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ukraine to the meeting with the first deputy minister Ruslan Demchenko.

“The Ukrainain side once again has expressed heavy disappointment over the fact that the detained citizens of Ukraine are still under arrest and have not been released,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry informs.

During the meeting Demchenko underlined that such actions of the Belarusian side contradict the friendly spirit of the bilateral relations and underlined the necessity of immediate release of the Ukrainian citizens, as their further incarceration damage bilateral Ukrainian-Belarusian relations.

In his turn the representative of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Belarus assure that he would bring to the notice of official Minsk the position of the Ukrainian side without delay.

As informed by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Ukrainian Embassy in Belarus keeps under special scrutiny the issue of Ukrainian citizens’ release, and the foreign policy agency is to take all necessary steps for their speedy release. “We hope that our compatriots will celebrate holidays at home,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry stressed.

As it was reported, earlier the Foreign Ministry informed that during protest rallies in Minsk one citizen of Ukraine was detained. He came to take parting the meeting together with his relatives from Belarus. Later he was arrested for 10 days.
