Minskers made a stand for Sevastopalski park

About three thousand signatures were gathered by the residents of Vastok-2 District of Minsk against building facilities in the city Sevastopalski Park and demolition of artesian wells situated on its territory.

The struggle of the residents of the capital district Vastok-2 against the plans on reconstruction of Sevastopalski Park of city authorities has been led since the year of 1995. It is planned to build a restaurant, a cafe, a sauna, a fitness center, a parking lot at the park’s territory, due to this one should cut more than a thousand trees and close artesian wells, the waters of which supply about 300 thousand residents of the district. The park, according to the general plan of Minsk development, is a part of landscape recreation zone and water protection zone of Slyapyanskaya water system, were eight wells of water intake “Zyalyonauka” are situated, BelaPAN reports.

The representative of the community Valyantsina Shaleinikava remarked that contradictory answers come to her requests from different organizations; the answers say that the wells operate and the water quality has not worsened for the last five years.

The representative of the community considers, that “officials mislead the population and the wells are closed with the aim of further constructions of different facilities in the park”. According to her words, later the community is planning to address international organizations, including the representations of European Commission and World Bank, which allocate means for nature conservation purposes to Belarus.
