Azarov: Ukraine to use other instruments to press on Belarusian authorities

The Prime Ministers of Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic condemned the human rights violations in Belarus as the Visegrad Four summit in Bratislava.

The Ukrainian delegation took part in the meeting but didn’t join the resolution, Radio Svaboda reports.

The Ukrainian PM, Mykola Azarov, explained his position to journalists:

“Such documents need more than five minutes to be prepared. Ukraine received the text of the resolution this morning. There is a special procedure of considering such statements, if a country signs a certain statement.”

The Ukrainian PM also noted that taking into account Ukraine’s good relations with Belarus, the country could use other instruments to influence the human rights situation.

“Firstly, we have open borders with Belarus; we have an agreement on free trade; we are the nearest neighbours; we cannot stay indifferent to the events in Belarus. We have other ways to convey our concern to the Belarusians leadership, taking into account the evaluation by European countries. And we are doing this,” Azarov noted.

According to Azarov, Ukraine thinks a dialogue can be more successful that the signed document, which was not provide to the Ukrainian party for detailed consideration.
