Lyabedzka released from KGB jail

On April 6 late at night the leader of the United Civil party Anatol Lyabedzka was released from the KGB remand prison on his own recognizance.

As BelaPAN was told by the head of the KGB Centre for Information and Public Relations Alyaksandr Antanovich, the leader of the United Civil Party (UCP) Anatol Lyabedzka was released from the KGB remand prison on April 6 late at night on his own recognisance.

We remind that during the presidential campaign Anatol Lyabedzka was an agent of a UCP representative, a presidential candidate Yaraslau Ramanchuk. He is a suspect in the case related to the so-called “mass riots” in Minsk on December 19.

The UCP leader was detained in the capital of Belarus on December 20 overnight in his personal flat and taken to the KGB remand prison. On December 22 it was informed that Lyabedzka announced a hunger strike protesting against his illegal detention, however he soon finished it on he request of his wife. Lyabedzka’s lawyer had not hade an opportunity to meet with his client since December 29. Lyabedzka’s meeting with the lawyer took place only on March 23.

We remind that earlier presidential candidates Vital Rymasheuski and Ales Mikhalevich, the editor of charter97.org Natallya Radzina, the campaign chief of Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, Andrei Dzmitryeu and an activist of “Tell the Truth!” campaign Syarhei Vaznyak were released.

Two more persons involved in the “mass riots” case were released from the KGB remand prison and placed under house arrest. They are a presidential candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu and a journalist of “Novaya gazeta” (Russia) Iryna Khalip, the wife of a presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov.
