Merkel: Belarus takes steps backward

The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, thinks that Belarus does not only move towards democracy, but demonstrates regress.

“Unfortunately, I must admit that Belarus takes steps backwards. I talked to Belarusian opposition representatives yesterday and I must say that attitude of the regime towards the opposition is absolutely unacceptable,” the German chancellor told journalists today at the EaP summit in Warsaw.

“As of now, we do not see much of democratization. Of course, we will support Belarus if democratization is noticed. To be honest, what I heard yesterday sounded not very optimistic,” Radio Svaboda cites Angela Merkel.
