Journalist called to a prosecutor’s office for a report about Pilipets

On 22 October a journalist Larysa Shchyriakova from Gomel was called to the regional prosecutor’s office.
A staff member of the department for fight against corruption and organized crime Iryna Makarevich asked for an explanation from the journalist as to the demonstration of a report about the arrest of the chairman of the Gomel city’s executive committee Viktar Pilipets. The report was shown on 26 September on the satellite TV channel Belsat on behalf of Shchyriakova.
“I explained that I made a report at the instance of a Belsat’s journalist. I don’t know what the prosecutor’s office will do with my explanation”, - Larysa Shchyriakova said to the press-service of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
The Gomel regional prosecutor’s office on 29 May made a warning to Shchyriakova for acting for the benefit of the Polish producer company NEWS Informacja. The independent journalist in March posted o video on youtube about the dwellers of the village of Yakimava Slabada of the Svetlagorsk district. They were speaking against the construction of a bleached sulfate factory near the village. The video was subsequently disseminated through other web-sites, including Belsat.
At the prosecutor’s office they considered that the company NEWS Informacja was a foreign media and in order to have labor relation with it an accreditation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus is needed.
The deputy of the regional prosecutor, senior Justice advisor Gennadzi Ramaniuk signed the official warning to Larysa Shchyriakova in May.
