They will confiscate driver’s licenses and cell phones for being in arrears with loan payments

In Belarusian banks they charge noticeable fees for being in arrears with loan payments.

“If you have a 32% mortgage, than for every day of a payment delay double interest will be charged of the loan ammount”, - they say in Belagroprombank.

The punishment is severe: one day of delay will mean the interest rate’s growth of up to 74%, Euroradio reports.

From March banks have been having an opportunity to seize the court and make the punishment even more noticeable.

“In court we can deprive debtors of drivers licenses, put the mobile network operations under arrest, limit the right to go abroad”, - they explain in Belinvestbank.

The court officers of Minsk districts’ courts say that depriving of a driving license is the extreme measure.

“It is a very troublesome procedure. We need to find out whether a person has a driver’s license and then deprive the person of it with the help of road police. But that is an extreme measure – after that people usually pay all the debts very quickly”, - they say in the Minsk Soviet district’s court.

More often a person is simply limited in the right to leave the country. In half of the cases the punishment justifies itself. Court officers estimate that the proportion of loan debtors is not small – around 20% of all the court decrees in the Soviet district’s court. The same numbers they give in the courts of October and Pervomaiski districts.
