Aliaksandr Atroshchankau: EU may introduce new sanctions

Introduction of the issue of Belarusian political prisoners into the European Parliament’s agenda tells about a strong position of Lukashenka’s opponents.

“I can welcome that the members of European Parliament have such an interest to the Belarusian political prisoners. It is very important to seek for a meeting with political prisoners in order to have an idea of what is going on with them”, - a coordinator of the civic campaign European Belarus and former political prisoner Aliaksandr Atroshchankau told the charter97.org web-site.

“The fact that the issue of Belarusian political prisoners put on the agenda of the European Parliament tells that the positions of the parliament’s adherents of principled policy towards Lukashenka are strong. I do not rule out strengthening the European Union’s policy, including the discussion of the issue of introduction of targeted economic sanctions against Lukashenka’s family”, - Aliaksandr Atroshchankau noted.

We would remind that the chairman of the European Parliament’s delegations for the relations with Belarus Philip Kaczmarek told journalists that the European Parliament will take next steps in order to have a possibility to attend the Belarusian political prisoners in prisons.

Also, according to the chairman of the European Parliament’s delegations for the relations with Belarus, the issue of Belarusian political prisoners is very intently followed at the highest level. It is expected that European Parliament members will return to the issue of the political prisoners in Belarus in December, when the report on human rights in the world will be discussed.
