MEP demands to stop pressing on Statkevich

Marek Migalski has sent an appeal to the chief of prison No. 4 in Mahilou and the head of the Belarusian Corrections Department.

The appeal urges to stop harassing former Belarusian presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich, BelaPAN news agency reports.

The reason for the appeal was the  information that the staff of prison No. 4 in Mahilou try to isolate Statkevich: he is denied a visit of an orthodox priest and cannot receive parcels, newspapers and brochures.

Marek Migalski stressed he regards these actions in relation to Statkevich as the intention to isolate the inmate from rest of the world “to break him psychologically, deprive him of moral support and create the impression that all people forgot and left him”. The MEP underlined the actions of the prison staff are nothing else but pressure, torture and cruel treatment. Under the Convention against Torture, which was ratified by Belarus, any forms of torture and cruel treatment in prisons are unacceptable.

Marek Migalski called to stop repression against Mikalai Statkevich and inform him why the staff of prison No. 4 in Mahilou has not allowed Statkevich to meet with an Orthodox priest since Orthodox Easter till today.
