Speaker of Polish Sejm: “Our duty is to help nations who have no freedom”

An exhibition dedicated to the fifth anniversary of Belsat TV channel opened in the Polish Sejm.

The opening ceremony was attended by Polish Sejm Speaker Ewa Kopacz, chairman of the parliamentary group for Belarus Robert Tyszkiewicz, Belsat director Agnieszka Romaszewska, Sejm member and chairman of the Polish parliamentary group to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Andrzej Halicki, political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich's wife Maryna Adamovich, former political prisoner and coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign Zmitser Bandarenka, charter97.org editor-in-chief Natallia Radzina, co-director of the Belarusian House in Warsaw Zmitser Barodka and Ales Zarembiuk and others.

The Sejm Speaker emphasised the peculiar role of the independent media in the formation of democratic society in Belarus and the duty of free countries to support the nations who have no freedom yet.

“We were listening to Radio Free Europe for Poland in the 1960s, the 70s and the 80s. Today, Belarusians watch the only independent Belarusian TV channel Belsat,” Ewa Kopacz said adding that she was proud that the TV channel works in Poland. Ewa Kopacz says she is happy that the work of Belsat is possible thanks to Sweden, Canada, the EU and the United States.

According to Robert Tyszkiewicz, all parliamentary groups of the Polish Sejm support the idea that Belsat needs to work for Belarus.

TV Channel director Agnieszka Romaszewska called on the audience to remember about those suffering in Belarus for their desire to do their job and for their views and especially about political prisoners.

Special stands and multimedia installations tell the story of the first Belarusian TV channel and show everyday life in Belarus.

Besides the works about repressions and persecution of independent journalists and Belsat staff in Belarus the exhibition displays data on the audience, programmes and viewing statistics.

The exhibition shows achievements of the channel – the list of main awards and short information about support from governments and international organisations.

The exhibition is funded by the Sejm Chancellery. The authors of the display are Mateusz Adamski and Boguslawa Ogrzebacz. Pawel Pogoda was in charge of graphic design.

Belsat TV was launched on December 10, 2007.
