5-million fine for prayer

The court of Minsk's Maskouski district fined businessman Alyaksandr Makayeu 50 base penalty units.
He was found guilty of holding an unsanctioned rally in the village of Hrozava on December 1 on the anniversary of the Slutsk Uprising. Alyaksandr Makayeu has to pay a fine of 5 million rubles, Radio Svaboda reports.
The opposition activist said at the trial that commemoration of the heroes of the Slutsk Uprising was not a rally. Witnesses said at the trial people had prayed and sung, but no one had chanted slogans.
