Polish President's wife meets with Kavalyou family

Poland's First Lady Anna Komorowska has received the mother and sister of executed Ualdzislau Kavalyou in Warsaw today.

Uladislau Kavalyou's mother Lyubou and sister Tatsyana are in Poland on invitation by private channel TVN, which earlier made a detailed report on the bombing case and published on its website Lyubou Kavalyova's appeal asking to influence the Belarusian authorities to impose a moratorium on the death penalty in the country, Radio Svaboda reports.

“I an not a politician. I am an ordinary person. I am making this appeal not only on my own behalf  but also on behalf of all mothers of the country. I am making this appeal to never allow this to repeat again, to influence our president in some way to make him impose a moratorium on the death penalty. Do your best and help me,” she says.

The Belarusians met with the leadership of the Polish Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and thanked the organization for collecting signatures under the appeal on death penalty abolition in Belarus.

“We need to demand the Belarusian authorities to respect people's age-old right to bury their relatives […] Death penalty should be eradicated from legislation, from human mind and hearts,” Galina Bortnowska from the Helsinki Foundation said during the meeting.

Poland's First Lady Anna Komorowska, who decided to support the appeal, received Lybou and Tatsyana Kavalyovas. The meeting was held without journalists.
