Anatol Liabedzka: Nobody knows what kind of terrible things may be happening in our prisons

The politician believes that the tortures of prisoners in Georgia became known to the public because of a strong opposition.

Chairperson of the United Civil Party (UCP) Anatol Liabedzka commented for charter97.org on the scandal around tortures and assaults in a prison in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

“Although Mikhail Saakashvili positions himself as a European politician, from time to time the burps of the past come up tp the surface. Despite Saakashvili‘s European schooling and Western rhetoric, some of his actions and deeds show an inclination towards authoritarian patterns. This scandal undoubtedly hits his reputation. Solutions that involve power are typical for all authoritarian rulers, and we are witnessing the regime’s relapse,” the politician said. “This case has become known to the public because no matter what, there is a strong opposition in Georgia. We can only guess what is going on in the Belarusian prisons. I think that when the power changes, we’ll hear about more terrible stories from the Belarusian penitentiary system,” Anatol Liabedzka believes.

”After this scandal, the Georgian Interior Minister, one of Saakashvili’s closest teammates, had to retire. In Belarus, people get promoted for such things,” the UCP leader remarked.

We remind that recently it has been reported about tortures in Georgian prisons. The video from Gldani prison number 8 of Tbilisi that became available for independent media shows prisoners being beaten up and raped with batons. After the scandal, just ten days before the parliamentary elections Geogria’s Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia, one of Saakashvili’s closest politicians, retired
