Dunja Mijatovic wants to struggle for Khalip, Poczobut and Surapin

Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, met with charter97.org editor Natallia Radzina in Warsaw.

They discussed the situation of freedom of speech in Belarus, in particular the state of presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov's wife Iryna Khalip, Gazeta Wyborcza journalist Andrzej Poczobut and photo correspondent Anton Surapin.

Iryna Khalip serves a two-year suspended sentence after the events on December 19, 2010. She is in fact under house arrest. Andrzej Poczobut may face a prison term over a new criminal case for alleged libel against Lukashenka in his article on charter97.org. Anton Surapin may be thrown into prison for 7 years for posting on the Internet photos of teddy bears dropped over Belarus by Swedish pilots.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media said she monitored the situation of the repressed Belarusian journalists and intended to do her best for criminal charges to be dropped from them.

Alyaksandr Atroshchankau, a former political prisoner and spokesman for presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov, was present at the meeting. He talked to the OSCE representative about his situation and cases of detaining and beating journalists during the latest “election campaign”.
