A criminal case was initiated against the police officer.
Senior inspector on duty from a Minsk police station is charged with violating part 3 of article 426 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (abuse of power committed by a senior official or abuse of power causing serious harm, as well as committing intentional acts beyond the scope of one's official rights and duties relating to violence, torturing or insulting a person or using weapons and special equipment). The offence can be punished with up to 10 years in prison, Ezhednevnik reports.
In accordance with preliminary information from the Investigation Committee, the incident occurred on May 10, 2012. A senior lieutenant was on duty in the second police station of the Maskouski district of Minsk brutally beat and inflicted great bodily injury on a detained man, 44, who had been taken to the police station.
There is no information about the reasons for the incident, but a prosecutor's office and the main security department of the Interior Ministry carried out an inquiry the alleged offence after man's complaint. Results of the inquiry were submitted to the Investigation Committee after the fact of beating was confirmed.
It should be noted that Minsk guardians of order discredited themselves in the last few months. Charter97.org recently reported about initiating a criminal case against a warrant officer of Minsk police, who had been sexually abusing his stepdaughter for nine years since the girl was five.
The main police department of the the Minsk city executive committee gives no comments on the situation pretending that nothing happened. However, public discontent over outrageous conduct of police officers is growing.
