Former head of BRYU was sentenced to 6 years in prison

Court sentenced former deputy chairman of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee Leanid Kavaleu to six years in prison.

The verdict in his case was announced today at the Minsk City Court, informs BelTA.

Leanid Kavaleu was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in a penal colony of strict security, with confiscation of property and deprivation of the right to hold positions related to execution of organizational and administrative functions for a period of five years. In this case, due to the amnesty, Kavaleu’s sentence has been reduced for one year.

The court found him guilty under the p.3 art.430 (bribery on a large scale) of the Criminal Code of Belarus.

Recall, former deputy chairman of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee Leanid Kavaleu was arrested about a year ago.

Recall that the information about the possible detention of the Deputy Chairman of Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee Leanid Kavaleu at first appeared in the summer of 2011. Officially, security services didn't confirm that. Even information about date and place of hearing the case of the official was hidden from independent journalists.

It should be noted that at this position Kavaleu worked for only year and a half. Before that, in 2009, he spent few months as a Vice-Chairman of the Vitebsk City, Executive Committee, to where he was transferred from the post of Chief of Administration of the Minsk Region Executive Committee.

However, the most famous this native of Baranavichy district became in 2005-2008, being the first and the second secretary of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRYU). Before that Kavaleu had an experience of being a chairman of Kirov collective farm in Baranavichy district (1999-2003) and the first deputy chairman of the Brest Regional Executive Committee (2004-2005).
