Zmitser Barodka: Lukashenka again trades in political prisoners

3

An attempt to made Mikalai Statkevich apply for a pardon was caused by serious problems in the Belarusian economy.

This opinion was expressed by the director of the Belarusian House in Warsaw, Zmitser Barodka, in an interview with Belsat TV.

He thinks the Belarusian economy is in a serious crisis and doesn't have development prospects.

“That is the reason why Belarus starts talks with the World Trade Organisation on joining the organisation. For this to happen, the Belarusian authorities must release the political prisoners and Mikalai Statkevich is among of the most important ones,” Zmitser Barodka noted.

The activist thinks Lukashenka again begins to trade with the West. Though the West understands that Lukashenka will not allow radical changes, the trade process goes on.

Barodka stresses that western countries deal with the Lukashenka regime due to dictator's powerful lobby in Europe. “Lukashenka invests huge money in repairing Belarus's image and creating his positive image,” Barodka thinks.

In his view, Lukashenka wants to keep up appearances in the eyes of the world community. One of the ways is to release the political prisoners, but only if they apply for a pardon.
